Short Introduction

The Sundarbans is not an isolated ecosystem. Its rivers and waterways are connected to a much larger landscape, carrying water from upstream agricultural and human settlements toward the Bay of Bengal. This four-day field expedition explored how pollutants and chemical residues carried through the river system may travel into the Sundarbans, and what implications this could have for its fragile mangrove ecosystem, aquatic biodiversity and fisheries.

 

The expedition brought together scientists, university researchers and media professionals for field sampling, environmental observation and documentary documentation across different parts of the Sundarbans.

 

Key Expedition Highlights

Tracing Pollution from the River Mouth

The expedition began near the Pashur River estuary, at the beginning of the Sundarbans, where the team started collecting river-water samples. The objective was to establish a field-based picture of water conditions at different points as water flows through the Sundarbans toward the sea.

 

Following the Water Through the Sundarbans

The team followed the river system deeper into the forest, collecting water samples from multiple locations, including areas around Kokilmoni and Kotka. Sampling at different locations allowed the researchers to examine water conditions along the flow of the Sundarbans rather than relying on observations from a single point.

 

Scientists Studying the Mangrove Environment

The expedition included scientific observation of the relationship between the flowing water and the surrounding mangrove environment. A scientist from Switzerland, together with researchers from Bangladesh Agricultural University, participated in the field investigation, examining environmental conditions and collecting samples for further analysis.

 

From Upstream Agriculture to the Bay of Bengal

Agricultural landscapes across Bangladesh are connected to the Sundarbans through an extensive network of rivers, canals and waterways. Rainwater and surface runoff can carry substances from agricultural areas into local water bodies, which eventually connect with larger rivers and the coastal system. The project therefore looked at pollution as a connected landscape-to-coast issue, rather than as an isolated problem inside the Sundarbans.

 

Dublar Char: Fisheries, Dry Fish & Waste

The expedition also documented the fishing community of Dublar Char, one of the important fishing and dry-fish processing areas of the Sundarbans. Large quantities of fish are processed here, while residual fish parts and processing waste create another environmental dimension requiring attention. The visiting media team documented the livelihoods of the fishing community, dry-fish processing activities and the waste generated around the fish-processing areas.

 

Documentary Documentation from the Field

Alongside scientific fieldwork, the expedition was documented through video interviews, field footage and aerial drone imagery. The media team recorded the environmental landscape of Dublar Char, fishing and dry-fish activities, local livelihoods and the broader ecological setting. These visual records helped connect scientific research with the everyday realities of people living and working within the Sundarbans landscape.

Pollution in the Sundarbans cannot always be understood by looking only at the forest itself. The ecosystem is connected to a much larger river network that links inland landscapes with the coast. This expedition brought together scientific research, field sampling, environmental observation and documentary storytelling to explore that connection.
